Phonics

Throughout school we use the Letters and Sounds approach to teach Phonics.

The teaching is interactive and multi-sensory. Pupils throughout school are taught in small groups and move rapidly through the phases.

Pupils in KS2 who have not achieved fluency revisit the letters and sounds programme in small groups and their progress is closely monitored by our school SENCO.

Pupils in EYFS and KS1 have a daily phonics lesson in small groups either with a teacher or a teaching assistant. These groups are rotated frequently to ensure that the children do not always have the same adult and the teachers can be more aware of the progress of each individual child.

We do not have a single reading scheme in school as wee use the ‘Book Bands’ approach to graduating our individual reading books. Children also have at least 1 guided reading session each week throughout school.
